Privacy Policy

Your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our website.

Information We Collect

We may collect information you provide directly to us, such as your name, email address, and any other information you choose to provide. When you use the commenting service, technical information may also be collected as described below.

How We Use Information

We use your information to respond to inquiries, improve our website, and communicate with you about updates or services.

Cookies

We may use cookies and similar technologies to enhance your experience on our site.

Comments

We use a system based on Waline to provide comments. Waline is open-source comment software; the Waline project does not independently store or process our comment data. When you submit a comment, we collect your nickname, comment content, and any email address or website address you choose to provide. A nickname is required; email and website addresses are optional. The service may also collect your IP address and browser User-Agent (UA) to operate the commenting service, prevent spam, and maintain security.

If you provide an email address, we may use it to send comment notifications or other comment-related communications, such as replies from other users or the administrator. We will not use your email address for other purposes or share it with third parties except as required by law or to provide necessary services.

Your nickname, comment content, and website address, if provided, may be displayed publicly. Please avoid including personal or sensitive information in these fields. Your email address is not publicly displayed by the commenting service.

The commenting service uses Vercel for hosting and Neon for database storage. Comment data is stored on servers located in London, United Kingdom. These providers process the relevant data to support the commenting service.

If you would like to request correction or deletion of your comment or associated personal information, please contact us using the contact details below.

Third-Party Services

We do not share your personal information with third parties except as required by law or to provide our services. The following third-party services may collect information about you:

  • Vercel Analytics: We use Vercel Analytics to collect information about how you use our website. This information is used to improve our website and services. For more information, please see the Vercel Analytics - Privacy Policy

GDPR Data Protection Terms

Where the EU GDPR or UK GDPR applies, the website operator, Miron Chen, is the controller of your personal data. Please use the contact details below for privacy questions or requests to exercise your rights.

Lawful Basis

We provide and manage comments and prevent spam and abuse on the basis of our legitimate interests in running the blog, supporting discussion, responding to inquiries, and protecting the website and its readers (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). We process only necessary information and balance these interests against your interests and rights. Optional processing that legally requires consent is subject to separate consent (Article 6(1)(a)); reading this policy or continuing to browse does not constitute consent. Processing required by law is based on a legal obligation (Article 6(1)(c)).

A nickname and comment content are required to submit a comment; you do not need to use your real name. Leaving out the optional email or website address does not prevent you from commenting. Browsing articles does not require you to provide comment information.

Retention and Deletion

Comments, nicknames, and website addresses are retained while the relevant article and discussion remain public and the comment remains useful to the discussion. Email addresses are retained only while needed for communication or the commenting service. IP addresses, browser information, and security logs are retained only while needed for spam prevention, abuse investigations, or security incidents. We determine retention periods based on these purposes and deletion requests; information that is no longer needed and has no legal basis for retention will be deleted or anonymised.

Backup copies may not be individually removable immediately and will be deleted at the end of the backup retention cycle. In the meantime, they are used only for necessary recovery and security purposes. Information needed for legal obligations or disputes is retained only to the extent and for the period necessary.

Third Parties and International Processing

Neon and Vercel provide database and hosting services. Akismet may receive comment, identity, network, and browser information needed for spam detection. The comment database is stored in London, United Kingdom, while logs, backups, support access, or third-party processing may take place in other locations.

Depending on his location, the website operator, Miron Chen, accesses and processes all website comment-related data in the United Kingdom or mainland China for comment management, replies, spam prevention, and security. This includes nicknames, comment content, email and website addresses you provide, and IP addresses, browser information, comment timestamps, and other comment-related records collected by the commenting service. The recipient of the data for this processing is the website operator himself.

For international transfers restricted by the GDPR or UK GDPR, we must use an applicable adequacy decision, standard contractual clauses, or another lawful transfer mechanism, with supplementary safeguards where necessary. You may contact us for information about recipients, processing locations, and applicable safeguards, and to request a copy of those safeguards.

Your Rights

Subject to the conditions set out in law, you may request access to, correction or deletion of your personal data, or restriction of processing. You may also object to processing based on legitimate interests for reasons relating to your situation. We will stop the processing you object to unless there are overriding compelling legitimate grounds or the processing is necessary for legal claims.

For data you provide that is processed by automated means on the basis of consent or a contract, you may request it in a commonly used, machine-readable format and, where technically feasible, have it transferred to another controller. You may withdraw consent at any time without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal.

Please include the comment link, nickname, and details of your request. We may make proportionate identity checks where necessary. Requests are normally free of charge, and we will generally respond within one month. Where legally permitted, complex or numerous requests may take up to two additional months; we will explain the reasons within the first month. If we cannot lawfully fulfil a request, we will explain why and how you can complain.

Spam prevention tools may automatically flag or filter comments. You may contact us to request human review. If we introduce decisions based solely on automated processing that have legal or similarly significant effects, we will separately explain their basis, logic, effects, and your related rights.

Complaints

You may complain directly to a competent supervisory authority without contacting us first, including the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), or, where the EU GDPR applies, the supervisory authority in the EU Member State of your habitual residence, place of work, or the place of the alleged infringement.
